There's a good chance I'll drive up from Brisbane to have him do the custom fitting when I do my engine swap for the headers that will be going on at the same time

Yeah I had a VERY brief look at those things,I'm looking for a tuned length style of extractor.
If you get a custom set made you should be fine, but be careful with importing some from Europe as the tuned length ones tend to be for LHD.

The Fritz Bitz headers are well renowned for RHD e28s (they're pretty well respected in the UK, much like Metric Mechanic in the US).

They're that weird shape (with the first runner going under the engine mount) because between the steering box and the engine mount there is very little room for tuned length headers in the e28.

Even shorty headers are better than the cast manifolds on the M30.

G'day Luke, here(if it comes out) are the 2 versions that FB offer...you can see the difference in both design and price.

...or am I incorrect in the engine they ^ fit?

The second set you've linked are for the M88 M5 engine, not the M30. I agree - the M88 headers look better, but I'm not sure they'll fit the M30.

The eBay knockoffs are obviously a copy of the ones in the first link.

There's also Motorsports Downunder if you've stumbled on to them. They normally sell their headers for $900 a set. I had been thinking about looking at their e34 535i headers to see whether they could be modified to fit the e30.

They do them for $900. Most of their headers are "$3k+", but then they have regular "sales" where they are $900. If you look at their full catalogue they have the e28 listed at $900.

How much are the Cairns guys going to charge? I can't imagine a custom set are going to be particularly cheap?
