    Nigels E21 S50B30 Project

    Hi guys

Just finished my m50 engine swap. The car is my daily and i managed to hydrolock the original k-jet m20b23. Luckily i sourced a new engine within a week and started with the conversion. Engine is a non vanos e34 m50 with 68000k and start to finish the swap took 8 weeks. I think it could even be done in half that time, as 4 weeks of that was waiting for the ally welder to mod my sump.

il start with a few of the car from before the swap.

    Nigels E21 M50 (now S50B30 build)

It looked like this before it sucked up a heap of water

...and my brother towed me home., i killed the motor less than 50m from my house, on my own street which made it so much worse.

I used new e30 m20 rubber mounts which were at least 10mm taller than my 27yr old ones.

    battery tray out

Old e21 m20 rubber mount, and new e30 m20 rubber

The sump cleared the steering rack by about 10-15mm even with the cover and damper in place. I ended up trimming some more clearance just in case.

The two more challenging jobs. Routing the exh manifold turned out to be easier than expected, just ran it as close to the block as i could. The sump however was a little more tricky, i cant weld aluminium so had to send this off to be done.

Added a wing on one side, right next to the pickup. Left some of the wall there with slots and holes machined into it to act as a baffle also.

Pickup is die cast ally so couldnt be welded. It was sectioned and had a bronze threaded sleeve fitted to join the two halves. All in all i lost oil capacity but ive purchased a 2 litre accusump just in case. Havent fitted this yet.

Had to drive it to the exhaust shop with headers only and no bonnet. It was LOUD. Wanted to give it a squirt just once but anything over 1.5k was deafening.

Also running without a MAF at the moment so DME is running on default/basemap which is quite rich. Have a much smaller filter on it now which all fits well under the bonnet.

Was a really good feeling getting it out of the garage on its own power, good to have some room to move in there too.

    Hehe, sweet.

That sump scares me a little though. If I was driving that car I would be looking to dodge even the reflector cats eyes...

    Looks seriously tidy thought. Congrats.
    Cheers,
    Michael.

Thanks The engine sits at the original m20 angle which allowed me to use the factory e21 getrag 5 speeder with e21 flywheel.

Sump was a big concern for me as i had already destroyed an m20 tin sump on the old motor. The e34 sump was modded to give about 110mm clearance to the road. Will be fitting a 2 litre accusump once i work out where to mount it
